The future of Social Sites on the Web

Social sites such as MySpace.com, Facebook, Japan’s huge successful networking site Mixi and even YouTube.com are unquestionably one of the biggest trends on the internet in the past few years. They are only going to get bigger as they start to branch out to reach different cultures. MySpace is planning on making a push in the Japanese culture while Mixi is going to branch out to the US. With MySpace.com’s “all about me attitude” it may be hard to translate into the Japanese culture where they are not as aggressive as Americans. Japan’s social networking site Mixi is more subtle as you cannot even join unless invited by someone who is already a member. The question is why doesn’t someone create a social network that is customizable by each member? Well, actually there is one becoming popular that has this ability, Ning.com. In this social networking site users can create their own network via a blog, web page, watching video clips, or slideshows. Creates in October of 2004, Ning now serves over 30,000 social networks and growing. The versatility to create a network with little programming knowledge and a wide array of tools is something that I believe will set it apart in the future. The concept that Ning has of completely customizable social networking is the future of social networking.
